Welcome “The Block” to Longton Exchange – a new creative space.

Longton Exchange is proud to welcome two new tenants to “The Block” – Hojo Hattery and Eve Travis Art. This new creative space, run by artists Holly Johnson and Eve Travis and hosted by Urban Wilderness CIC, is located at Unit 6 and is female-led and community-centred. Holly and Eve are excited to join Longton Exchange and be part of the efforts of manager Chris Ward to rejuvenate and revitalize the precinct’s arts and culture section.

The Block is primarily a shared studio but will also host a variety of workshops, exhibitions, and events. It’s an innovative new arts space that advocates for community, inclusivity, and creativity. By bringing the streets to life, The Block aims to create a vibrant and dynamic environment for artists and the community alike.

Eve Travis, a local circus performer and artist, has toured around the world and is now based at The Block. Along with her expertise in circus skills, Eve is a costume maker, character creator, writer, producer, and performer. She also teaches circus skills, clowning, theatre, and movement workshops at events, in schools, and as part of community projects nationwide. Her artwork explores the boundaries between performing on stage, in art spaces, and in everyday life, which influences and inspires her performance style as well as innovative new workshops.

Holly Johnson is an award-winning, self-taught hat maker, specializing in the traditional heritage craft of ‘Felt Blocking’. She sells her work online through her business, Hojo Hattery, and produces classic styles such as fedoras, top hats, bowlers, boleros, and more. Holly handmakes her felt hats from scratch using traditional equipment and techniques, along with more contemporary methods of embellishment like pyrography, fire, and paint to create personal, custom, and creative headwear. Holly has been learning her craft for three years and has delivered live hat-making talks and tutorials online for The British Millinery Association and The Heritage Crafts Association. Holly has now outgrown her spare bedroom studio and has found a hat-making home at The Block.

Both Holly and Eve have curated a variety of community and arts events, showcasing and celebrating Stoke-on-Trent artists of all forms. Stay tuned for future announcements to see how they’ll bring local arts and culture to Longton Exchange this Summer.

Both businesses have been renovating their spaces and are excited to start working. We can’t wait to see the unique, exciting events, and opportunities they will bring to Longton Exchange. We will soon announce their grand opening event, which will be open to the public, so keep an eye out for any upcoming events.

At Longton Exchange, we believe that the arts can bring people together and enrich our lives in countless ways. We strive to create a hub for arts and culture in the community and are excited to share the vibrant arts scene in the town of Longton.

We are thrilled to welcome Hojo Hattery and Eve Travis Art to Longton Exchange, and we invite you to check out their Instagram profiles at @hojohattery, @circusinabox, and @evedearbhailart.
